Special DiscountsĪs part of a long-standing and successful collaboration between the University and the Society, the University of Nicosia community – which includes students, alumni, faculty and staff – are offered a special discount on the entrance fee. Friends of Cinema organizes several European film festivals throughout the year, often in collaboration with local embassies, which feature award winning films that highlight modern trends in world cinema. The Society provides cinema audiences in Cyprus the opportunity to enjoy artistic and independent foreign films that hail from countries such as China, Japan and Iran. Since its establishment, the Society organizes regular weekly screenings throughout the majority of the year. The Society was founded in 1991 as a non-profit organization by a group of individuals with a passion for films at a time when Cypriot society was dominated by video rentals. The University of Nicosia Cine Studio is host to the Cyprus Friends of Cinema society, which screens quality films as an alternative to mainstream Hollywood blockbusters.
These screenings include films of special interest: works of famous directors, film festivals originating from a particular country or genre, famous classics, and others.
Through a long-standing collaboration with the Friends of Cinema Society, Cine Studio screens quality films throughout the year between September and June. In furthering its cultural contribution to society, the University of Nicosia houses a film theatre on campus.
